SCIENTIFIC WORK
OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LATIN LANGUAGE AND MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
The scientific work of the department (at that time the course of Latin Language and Basics of Medical Terminology within the Department of Foreign Languages) started from the moment of foundation of the department in August 1948. The Department was headed by PhD of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor I.O. Plotnikov (1948-1971). The object of scientific work of Latin lecturers at that time was the linguistic aspects of clinical terminology, lexical and syntactic features of Latin medical text, issues of linguistic regulation of prescription, which were deeply studied with coming of the next head of the department – Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor N.I. Bezborodko (1975-1980).
Active scientific work was conducted in 1984-1994, when the department was headed by PhD of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor T.A. Riabokon. As a result of scientific developments on the topic «Structure and Semantics of the text», scientific works on the linguistic analysis of Latin medical terminology and methods of teaching Latin were published.
In 1994-2015 the department was headed by PhD of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor L.M. Kim, under whose careful guidance, teachers, including those of the Latin language and medical terminology, worked on the topic «Systematic study of vocabulary. Compiling of branch’s dictionaries». The Latin teaching staff prepared and published textbooks, Latin-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Latin dictionaries, sets of methodological recommendations and sets of control materials. MANAGEMENT OF STUDENT RESEARCH WORK
Student Scientific Circle
“Studeamus Latinam”
The circle meetings take place according to the schedule (since 2020 in online format: the class at Teams “Student Scientific Circle of the Latin Language and Medical Terminology Department, the link lausfcf).
At the SSC meetings, 1-st and 2-nd year students present the results of scientific sources review on a particular problem, personal research, and independent substantiated conclusions under the guidance of the department teachers. The meetings of the circle are open. They are actively attended by student listeners, who discuss the actual topics. Such practice contributes to obtaining deeper knowledge of the latest nomenclatures, enriches active professional vocabulary and erudition. The best works are recommended for participation in student scientific conferences, writing scientific abstracts.
On February 14, 2024 the Latin Language and Medical Terminology Department and the Endoscopic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department held a joint meeting of student scientific circles. The teaching staff of the departments described presented students’ reports in detail and meaningfully and gave useful advice and recommendations. The meeting was very productive and successful because knowledge of the Latin grammar basics, Greek-Latin word-forming elements, semantics of lexical units of modern international nomenclatures and special professional expressions involves complete integration with the disciplines of professional training.
